Ring of Fire

Ring of Fire, oil on canvas, 6x12

I have run out of my gessobords, and that has forced me to search my painting material remnants to find something else to use. This was painted on an unstretched canvas but stapled to a hardboard under it. It gave me the texture and "pull" of canvas but the non-springy aspect of board painting. I will stretch it upon purchase. I found a beautiful photo of a field of poppies on morgue file.com, the free photo site I use when I "can't get there".  I loved the "motion" created by the composition. It is similar to what my eye finds when searching for subject matter.

Graduation Carnation

Graduation Carnation, oil on gessobord, 10 x 8"

I have been enjoying all the lovely painted flowers on DPW so I wanted to try it myself. The only flowers I could find were some carnations given to my son by a fellow student, for his high school graduation. I haven't had much luck in the flower area, though it hasn't been for the lack of trying. This one turned out to my liking!

Country Road, oil on board, 7 3/4" x 12"

This was a fun one...I think I used every shade of green. I had to organize the patches of shade vs. light more than I am used to before I started painting. My sketch looked like a checker board!

The View

The View, oil on gessobord, 9x14"

I painted this shortly after participating in an art show that was shut down due to tremendous rain and lightening.  It was a bummer.  This photo perked me up with it's radiating warmth and it was enjoying to paint. Now if I could just get there.

Primrose Alley

Primrose Alley, oil on canvas, 10 x 10"

I just found out the name of the lovely pink flowers that bloom throughout the first half of the summer in Louisville.  When I spotted some in the alley across from my backyard, I snapped a picture. The garage is old and stoic, and it was bathed in morning light.

Corner House

Corner House, oil on gessobord, 6x6"

I pass this house frequently, and I have always loved it. Besides the Arts and Crafts bungalow style, which I love, it sits on a corner lot which really shows off it's beautiful landscape.
As I have been doing consciously with the last few paintings, I did not sweat the small stuff, and worked with broader goals and strokes.

Two's for Tea

Two's for Tea, oil on gessobord, 6x6"

I was definitely was in the middle of an aggravating block not too long ago, not that I feel that it has completely passed. Regardless, I had bought bags of lemons, and limes because just having them in the house makes me feel better, and they remind me of California and sitting on my sister and brother-in-law's deck in Napa.
So what's left to do but paint them. I decided beforehand I was not going to fret the small stuff, so once I got the composition where I wanted it, I used a big brush and the rest is history.

Murky

Murky, oil on gessobord, 6x6"

A small cattail painting from a cloudy day.  These were brand new spring cattails, and extremely green with freshness.  I realized as I was working on this small painting that this is one of the subject matter that, for right now, I enjoy painting on a larger scale. May go out today in search of more cattails. They are like a little village all their own.
